At Schoone Oordt Country House in Swellendam, we’ve always believed in the beauty of meaningful connections—whether it’s with our guests, our community, or the little details that make our space extraordinary. One such connection is with the wonderful team at Weltevrede Flower Farm, whose seasonal blooms bring life and elegance to our historic home. Their story is one of passion, perseverance, and partnership, and we’re thrilled to share it with you.
A LITTLE SLICE OF HERITAGE (AND ROOSTERKOEK) ON THE N2

Just outside Swellendam, Oude Post Bistro is a beloved family-run stop, known for its famous roosterkoek, warm hospitality, and family-friendly charm. With a bistro, shop, playpark, and soon Art de Olivia, it’s a Western Cape road trip favourite we always recommend to Schoone Oordt guests.
Just 10 minutes outside of Swellendam, at the foot of the Twelve O’Clock Mountain and right alongside the Buffeljags River, lies one of our favourite stops for guests en route to (or from) Schoone Oordt — the ever-popular Oude Post Bistro.
But let’s be clear… this is no ordinary padstal.
A FAMILY-RUN GEM WITH A RICH HISTORY
When Marne and Steyn took over the space back in May 2013, they had just one day to renovate — and what they created was a warm, welcoming space with a flair for the nostalgic and a heart for community. Now, 12 years later, Oude Post Bistro is something of a Western Cape road trip legend.
Its name, and the dates featured on its logo (1730–1790), honour the legacy of the land — once a trading post under the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Back then, it was a hub for buying and selling livestock; today, it’s a hub for good food, great coffee, and heartfelt hospitality.
COME FOR THE ROOSTERKOEK, STAY FOR THE EXPERIENCE
Oude Post is famous for its roosterkoek — cooked on the fire, always fresh, and beautifully consistent. Their Chicken Mayo is the best-seller, but if you’re the adventurous type, add a swirl of basil pesto for a little extra kick. In Marne’s own words (borrowed from Mark Twain):
“Continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection.”
Consistency really is the secret ingredient to their success.
A SHOP, A BISTRO, A DESTINATION
In addition to their much-loved bistro, the family also owns the BP petrol station and Milk & Sugar, a delightful little spot added in 2015 that sells ice cream and milkshakes — just the thing for tired travellers (and energetic toddlers!).
And starting in September 2025, guests can browse the soon-to-open Art de Olivia store in the adjoining shop space. Expect hand-printed fabrics, ceramics, stationery, home décor, accessories, and fragrances — all with the bold, uplifting charm of Olivia Botha’s designs.
ROOTED IN COMMUNITY
What truly sets Oude Post apart is the heart behind the business. With 35 staff members, many from surrounding small towns like Buffeljagsrivier, Suurbraak, Slangrivier, and Swellendam, Marne and Steyn sees their greatest investment not in bricks and mortar, but in people.
One of the most heartwarming stories is that of Beverly Plaatjies, a beloved staff member who picks flowers on her way to work to decorate the restrooms and lift the spirits of guests. She’s known for her radiant smile and beautiful singing voice, bringing joy to everyone she meets. Her philosophy echoes the spirit of the space:
"To shine a light on those who have no sense of their awesome talents is the work of heroes." — Robin Sharma
FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
Oude Post Bistro is proudly pet-friendly, and offers a chance for everyone — two-legged and four — to stretch their legs. Kids can meet and feed the goats and tortoises at the small animal farm, explore an expansive playpark (complete with musical pipes), and enjoy photo ops in the quirky tin shed selfie spot. One of the little ones’ favourite things? Measuring their height — a simple tradition that somehow sticks.
WHY OUR GUESTS LOVE IT
We always recommend Oude Post Bistro to our guests, whether they’re arriving early or heading out with kids in tow. It’s not only convenient, it’s an experience. You’ll likely spend longer than planned — and love every minute of it.
Oude Post has been nominated twice by KFM as one of the best farm stall stops in the Western Cape… and once you’ve visited, it’s easy to see why.
A local stop with global charm, and a heart that welcomes all.
Don’t miss Oude Post Bistro — it’s the perfect prelude (or postscript) to your stay at Schoone Oordt.
