Just outside Swellendam, Oude Post Bistro is a beloved family-run stop, known for its famous roosterkoek, warm hospitality, and family-friendly charm. With a bistro, shop, playpark, and soon Art de Olivia, it’s a Western Cape road trip favourite we always recommend to Schoone Oordt guests.
A DIRT ROAD, A DREAM, AND THE WINES OF OLIVEDALE

At Schoone Oordt Country House, we value stories that honour nature, craftsmanship, and authenticity — and Olivedale Private Vineyards is a perfect example. Born from courage, creativity, and a deep respect for the land, each handcrafted wine tells a story of soil, wind, and patience, reflecting the same philosophy we embrace at Schoone Oordt, where we celebrate nature-led creation and local excellence.
Every now and then, we encounter a story that mirrors our own philosophy at Schoone Oordt Country House – a deep respect for nature, patience in craft, and the joy of sharing an experience like no other with those who visit our beautiful valley.
THE BAREFOOT WINEMAKER OF THE OVERBERG
At the end of a dusty dirt road in Buffeljagsrivier, where most would not expect to find a vineyard, winemaker Carl van Wijck discovered virgin soil and a dream waiting to be realised. Known fondly as the barefoot winemaker of the Overberg, Carl built Olivedale Private Vineyards with courage, creativity, and an unwavering respect for the land. Against all odds, in a region not known for winemaking, he established what has now become one of Swellendam’s most celebrated and awarded wine brands.
WHERE CREATIVITY MEETS SCIENCE
Carl believes that winemaking is where creativity and science meet.
“Only when a winemaker realises that he or she plays a minimal role in a natural process, then he or she can make wine.”
These words echo in every glass of Olivedale – wines that celebrate the mysteries of nature and perform a jubilant dance for the senses.
FROM DREAM TO LEGACY
The Olivedale story began with a meeting of minds between Carl and his Belgian friends. With land, vision, and extraordinary courage, they created not just a vineyard but a legacy. Their philosophy? Each wine must claim its own uniqueness. Some ferment naturally, others with commercial yeasts. Some mature in French oak, while others rely on clay. Skin and stem contact are embraced where it deepens flavour. Always flexible, always respectful – the process is guided more by the vineyard than by human hand.
WINES THAT WHISPER OF SOIL AND WIND
The result is a range of wines that can hold their own against the finest in the world – distinctive in taste, texture, aroma, and colour. They are not mass-produced, supermarket wines. They are wines that whisper of soil, wind, and patience.
A PERFECT MATCH FOR SCHOONE OORDT
At Schoone Oordt, we are proud to feature Olivedale on our tables. Their commitment to organic, nature-respectful winemaking fits seamlessly with our food philosophy, where we honour the seasons, local produce, and the stories behind them.
Together, we share a belief: when we step back and let nature take the lead, beauty and excellence follow.
And that’s why Olivedale is not just another wine on our list. It is a jewel in our region’s crown – and the perfect companion to the Schoone Oordt experience.
