Wild Kalahari works with ethical, regenerative farmers who raise pasture-fed, free-range beef, mutton and venison. Their meat is supplied to respected restaurants and delis across South Africa and is cut, dry-aged and cured with patience and care.

What makes this meat special is its purity. There are no chemical stimulants, routine antibiotics or mass-produced supplements. Animals live as they should, grazing freely on natural pastures and reaching maturity at their own pace. The result is honest, nourishing meat with depth of flavour and a clear sense of place.

FROM THE KALAHARI TO SWELLENDAM

Wild Kalahari is led by Jacques van der Merwe, a third-generation farmer who grew up on his family’s land in the Kalahari. That upbringing shaped a deep respect for animal welfare and responsible land use, values that continue to guide his work today.

Now based in Swellendam, Jacques runs a small artisanal butchery grounded in a back-to-basics approach. As both farmer and butcher, he understands that healthy land leads to healthy animals and better food on the plate.

THE CRAFT OF DRY-AGEING

Dry-ageing is central to the Wild Kalahari process. This traditional method, passed down through Jacques’s family, allows meat to rest in a carefully controlled environment. As moisture slowly evaporates, natural enzymes tenderise the muscle and flavour deepens.

Over time, the meat develops rich, layered notes that are earthy, nutty and gently smoky. It is a slow process that cannot be rushed, and one that only a small number of artisan butcheries in South Africa still practice using truly free-range meat.

REGENERATIVE AND FULLY TRACEABLE

The farmers Wild Kalahari works with farm holistically, using rotational grazing that allows the land to recover naturally. This approach supports long-term soil health, animal wellbeing and resilient ecosystems.

Because Jacques has farmed himself, these relationships are personal. Every animal is fully traceable to its source. Farms are visited regularly, conversations are open, and accountability is shared. This level of transparency matters deeply to us.

WHY IT MATTERS TO US

Food should nourish more than the body. It should reflect care, responsibility and respect for the world we are part of.

Working with Wild Kalahari allows us to serve meat that aligns with these values. It is food with integrity, prepared with skill and offered with intention. For us, that makes all the difference.

Every now and then, we encounter a story that mirrors our own philosophy at Schoone Oordt Country House – a deep respect for nature, patience in craft, and the joy of sharing an experience like no other with those who visit our beautiful valley.

THE BAREFOOT WINEMAKER OF THE OVERBERG

At the end of a dusty dirt road in Buffeljagsrivier, where most would not expect to find a vineyard, winemaker Carl van Wijck discovered virgin soil and a dream waiting to be realised. Known fondly as the barefoot winemaker of the Overberg, Carl built Olivedale Private Vineyards with courage, creativity, and an unwavering respect for the land. Against all odds, in a region not known for winemaking, he established what has now become one of Swellendam’s most celebrated and awarded wine brands.

WHERE CREATIVITY MEETS SCIENCE

Carl believes that winemaking is where creativity and science meet.

“Only when a winemaker realises that he or she plays a minimal role in a natural process, then he or she can make wine.”

These words echo in every glass of Olivedale – wines that celebrate the mysteries of nature and perform a jubilant dance for the senses.

FROM DREAM TO LEGACY

The Olivedale story began with a meeting of minds between Carl and his Belgian friends. With land, vision, and extraordinary courage, they created not just a vineyard but a legacy. Their philosophy? Each wine must claim its own uniqueness. Some ferment naturally, others with commercial yeasts. Some mature in French oak, while others rely on clay. Skin and stem contact are embraced where it deepens flavour. Always flexible, always respectful – the process is guided more by the vineyard than by human hand.

WINES THAT WHISPER OF SOIL AND WIND

The result is a range of wines that can hold their own against the finest in the world – distinctive in taste, texture, aroma, and colour. They are not mass-produced, supermarket wines. They are wines that whisper of soil, wind, and patience.

A PERFECT MATCH FOR SCHOONE OORDT

At Schoone Oordt, we are proud to feature Olivedale on our tables. Their commitment to organic, nature-respectful winemaking fits seamlessly with our food philosophy, where we honour the seasons, local produce, and the stories behind them.

Together, we share a belief: when we step back and let nature take the lead, beauty and excellence follow.

And that’s why Olivedale is not just another wine on our list. It is a jewel in our region’s crown – and the perfect companion to the Schoone Oordt experience.

But let’s be clear… this is no ordinary padstal.

A FAMILY-RUN GEM WITH A RICH HISTORY

When Marne and Steyn took over the space back in May 2013, they had just one day to renovate — and what they created was a warm, welcoming space with a flair for the nostalgic and a heart for community. Now, 12 years later, Oude Post Bistro is something of a Western Cape road trip legend.

Its name, and the dates featured on its logo (1730–1790), honour the legacy of the land — once a trading post under the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Back then, it was a hub for buying and selling livestock; today, it’s a hub for good food, great coffee, and heartfelt hospitality.

COME FOR THE ROOSTERKOEK, STAY FOR THE EXPERIENCE

Oude Post is famous for its roosterkoek — cooked on the fire, always fresh, and beautifully consistent. Their Chicken Mayo is the best-seller, but if you’re the adventurous type, add a swirl of basil pesto for a little extra kick. In Marne’s own words (borrowed from Mark Twain):
“Continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection.”

Consistency really is the secret ingredient to their success.

A SHOP, A BISTRO, A DESTINATION

In addition to their much-loved bistro, the family also owns the BP petrol station and Milk & Sugar, a delightful little spot added in 2015 that sells ice cream and milkshakes — just the thing for tired travellers (and energetic toddlers!).

And starting in September 2025, guests can browse the soon-to-open Art de Olivia store in the adjoining shop space. Expect hand-printed fabrics, ceramics, stationery, home décor, accessories, and fragrances — all with the bold, uplifting charm of Olivia Botha’s designs.

ROOTED IN COMMUNITY

What truly sets Oude Post apart is the heart behind the business. With 35 staff members, many from surrounding small towns like Buffeljagsrivier, Suurbraak, Slangrivier, and Swellendam, Marne and Steyn sees their greatest investment not in bricks and mortar, but in people.

One of the most heartwarming stories is that of Beverly Plaatjies, a beloved staff member who picks flowers on her way to work to decorate the restrooms and lift the spirits of guests. She’s known for her radiant smile and beautiful singing voice, bringing joy to everyone she meets. Her philosophy echoes the spirit of the space:
"To shine a light on those who have no sense of their awesome talents is the work of heroes." — Robin Sharma

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Oude Post Bistro is proudly pet-friendly, and offers a chance for everyone — two-legged and four — to stretch their legs. Kids can meet and feed the goats and tortoises at the small animal farm, explore an expansive playpark (complete with musical pipes), and enjoy photo ops in the quirky tin shed selfie spot. One of the little ones’ favourite things? Measuring their height — a simple tradition that somehow sticks.

WHY OUR GUESTS LOVE IT

We always recommend Oude Post Bistro to our guests, whether they’re arriving early or heading out with kids in tow. It’s not only convenient, it’s an experience. You’ll likely spend longer than planned — and love every minute of it.

Oude Post has been nominated twice by KFM as one of the best farm stall stops in the Western Cape… and once you’ve visited, it’s easy to see why.

A local stop with global charm, and a heart that welcomes all.
Don’t miss Oude Post Bistro — it’s the perfect prelude (or postscript) to your stay at Schoone Oordt.

Where Flowers and History Meet: Weltevrede Flower Farm and Schoone Oordt

A HEARTFELT BEGINNING

Weltevrede Flower Farm, nestled in the heart of our region, started as a heartfelt hobby. Johan, Willie, and Linda, the trio behind this blooming venture, set out with a simple desire: to enrich their lives through nature. What began as a personal project quickly blossomed into something more. With Willie’s farming roots, Linda’s passion for gardening, and Johan’s sense of adventure, flowers became the natural choice—and Weltevrede was born.

The farm has grown in leaps and bounds since its humble beginnings. Though it wasn’t initially planned as a commercial operation, the team embraced the challenge, diving headfirst into the world of flower farming. Through hard work and a willingness to learn, they’ve created something truly special—a farm where seasonal cut flowers thrive, reflecting the rhythm of nature.

Among their blooms, the ranunculus holds a special place. These stunning flowers, with their long vase life and delicate beauty, have proven to be not only a joy to grow but also a perfect fit for the Swellendam climate. Their versatility and charm make them a favorite, both on the farm and here at Schoone Oordt.

A SERENDIPITOUS PARTNERSHIP

Our partnership with Weltevrede Flower Farm was serendipitous. We reached out to them and were immediately captivated by their passion and dedication. It’s been a privilege to work with a team that cares so deeply about their craft. Their commitment to quality mirrors our own values, making this collaboration a natural fit.

The weekly flower deliveries from Weltevrede are always a highlight. Linda meticulously prepares the arrangements, ensuring every bloom is fresh and vibrant. We love the flexibility of their approach—our standing order allows them to deliver whatever is in season, ensuring that every bouquet is a true reflection of nature’s current palette. Whether cut the morning of delivery or carefully stored overnight, their flowers always arrive with a freshness that transforms our spaces at Schoone Oordt.

Quality is at the heart of everything they do at Weltevrede. The team has invested significant effort in improving their soil, turning a clay-rich foundation into a thriving environment for their flowers. Their sustainable practices, like drip irrigation and composting, ensure their farm is as kind to the planet as it is beautiful.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Of course, flower farming comes with its challenges. Weather is a constant factor, with strong winds testing the limits of their protective tunnels. Additionally, navigating the nuances of flower farming in their unique microclimate in Swellendam has required creativity and resilience. But with the help of friends in the industry and their own determination, the team at Weltevrede has overcome these hurdles, growing stronger with every season.

Looking ahead, Weltevrede has big dreams. They hope to open their farm to the public, sharing the magic of flower farming with visitors to Swellendam. Their vision includes supplying the local market with year-round blooms and continuing to provide Schoone Oordt with the elegant, high-quality flowers that grace our spaces.

MORE THAN FLOWERS

For us at Schoone Oordt, this partnership is about more than just flowers. It’s about supporting a local business that shares our commitment to beauty, sustainability, and community. Together, we’re creating something truly special—a blend of history, nature, and artistry that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who walks through our doors.

Weltevrede Flower Farm’s journey reminds us that great things often start small—with a seed, a vision, or a simple desire to create. Here at Schoone Oordt, we’re honored to be part of their story and to showcase their blooms, which so perfectly complement the elegance and charm of our historic country house in Swellendam.

At the time, Shantal, the owner/founder was staying on a small-holding herself. She was growing veggies and taking care of animals.

She had surplus veggies, so started making salads and bunching leeks and drove into town to look for people that may be interested in purchasing from her. She still remembers her very first customer calling her as soon as she got home and unpacked her box. ‘Shantal!’ she said, ‘the leeks have dirt on them’. Shantal began apologising profusely and the customer cut her short. ‘No’, she said, ‘I love them with dirt, it means that they were freshly harvested!’

Down the road from her small-holidng, there was a lady making cheese from her cow’s milk, another lady further on made preserves and another one, rusks… Shantal harvested and prepared her salads and leeks for her orders and then collected her neighbours’ produce on the way into town for deliveries.

I realised then that we are surrounded by so much food growing in and around our town of Swellendam, but a massive portion of it gets trucked off to central markets and sits in cold storage only to land back on our supermarket shelves again. I thought I’ll rather collect what I can from interested farmers and include their produce in our veggie box.

As we were also organic farmers, I have always looked out a bit more for organic farmers. We always list our produce as organic, biologically grown or regular so that customers can make an informed decision for themselves, but in all fairness, I’ve come to love all of my farmers. They are all making an incredible effort to grow food, it’s not an easy task, so we work with them all. We do draw the line at super harmful chemicals though.

We do all of our own farm visits for The Earth Centre and it always takes so much longer than expected. Farmers are very warm and inviting. Most of the time you are encouraged to join them for a heartfelt meal accompanied by a heartfelt story on how much they love what they do, their love for the land and their love for nourishing people.

There are a few farmers who have offered land to their farmworkers to grow for themselves. There is one guy in particular who has become an excellent producer. He now grows, not only for his family, but for neighbours, members of his community and even the farm owner himself and still has leftovers to sell. His veggies are so beautiful, the smell and the taste. Amazing!

We also have people coming in to trade with us, our backyard farmers. They don’t have much, a kg of lemons, a handful of kumquats, a few bunches of spinach or kale. Whatever they have, they bring and trade for what they need in the shop. These traders warm my heart.

We have the best egg farmers! Those hens have the best life ever. It is the biggest treat when the egg farmers come to deliver our eggs as we get warm hugs and lots of love.

The majority of our produce is grown/made by local hands. We always look for local to Swellendam first and then slightly further afield into the Overberg, if not available here. We have found some growers and others have found us. This is always a wonderful feeling, both ways.

There’re dairy farmers that try their hand at veggies and realise that they’re actually quite good at it. I do a little happy dance when that happens as it means they’ll continue for next season. More veg for Swellendam!

There’s our naartjie and watermelon farmer. They are such humble people, constantly serving their community. We’ve been receiving fruit from them for almost a year and today was the first day that he delivered the naartjies himself. It was so heartwarming to see him at our shop in person.

Our olive farmers are a little family living in the Karoo. They have a bunch of dogs and a sheep who thinks it’s a dog, his name is Wagter. They grow the most amazing olives, preserve them by hand and come to visit along with their own homegrown nuts as a snack.

When I first opened The Earth Centre Swellendam, I thought that we would be completely vegan, but then so many customers asked for earth-friendlier meat. We now have a wide range of free-range, organic, antibiotic and growth hormone free meats. It is such a pleasure working with these farmers. The respect, love and care for their wellbeing that they hold for these animals, is beautiful to behold.

We also have a family making beef, veggie & chicken broths for us, using the bones & veggies from our shop. They ensure that they are collagen rich and made with mountain spring water. (We actually use these broths as the base for our sauces at Schoone).

We now have a clothing room… I have been dreaming of a natural fibre range for a while and all of a sudden, the vibrant people that make these vibrantly coloured clothes arrived. For weeks the smell of freshly made clothes lingered in the shop.

I asked Wilbur & Gary what their favourite part of the shop is and they both said they love the busy-ness of Wednesdays and Thursdays, when farmers deliver and customers collect. We all connect, share our passion and chat about the joys or hardships of the week. It feels like two days of ‘kuiering’ in our little shoppie. I am so overwhelmed by the support that we receive from our producers and our customers alike. To everyone who has walked through our doors, whether you have come to work, shop, deliver, browse or just catch up, thank you! Thank you to Wilbur & Gary too, it is a pleasure serving with you.

We have sadly said goodbye to Elana, our usual fabulous photographer, as she’s just too busy with a new baba and lots of weddings. We very excitedly welcome Carlo Jorge as content creator though and very much look forward to working with him. Carlo did this lovely photoshoot with The Earth Centre! Uber talented, don’t you agree?

Traveller’s Choice 2022

We will be running the GourmetGetaways in Swellendam again next year from May through September, so watch this space for dates and details.

The very lovely Chef Jason Whitehead and his truly glorious food. Thank you to Elana van Zyl for the amazing photos (as usual).

The Menu

The real showstopper of a main… Prosciutto-wrapped Gemsbok, Celeriac Espuma, Blueberries, Rosemary Crumble and Balsamic Jus. NC, the owner of Tredici rated this dish as one of his top 10 meals of all time (and he eats out a lot!). This is what he had to say…

‘What an amazing chef. Had the honour of experiencing his food last weekend at the lovely Schoone Oordt where he was the celebrated chef during an intimate dinner with wine complimented from local Olivedale wines. Loved every course of the meal. Everything looked beautiful and tasted amazing. But the mains of Gemsbok stood out as one of my top 10 dishes ever! Chef Jason may you concur the world. You make all your diners fall in love with food over and over again. Can not wait to experience a meal with you again.‘

First course of homemade Mielie Bread, Paprika Butter and Smoked Snoek Paté. Followed by Porcini Mushroom Pastillas, Soy Truffle Gel, Toasted Pine Nuts with Mushroom Broth. Then, of course the Gemsbok main followed by my own favourite of Dark Chocolate Torte, Bourbon Dulce de Leche, Gorgonzola Icecream (sigh) and Textures of Beetroot.

The Conservatory Restaurant
We are still deciding on when to open our restaurant for dinners again, but have been working on the menu and including a couple of these dishes, thank you Jason. As much as I am very comfortable cooking breakfasts, I have never seen myself as a chef nor capable of creating fine-dining dinner dishes, but Chef Jason has been training me too. We shall open when we have a steady stream of guests again, at this stage looking like mid December.

Truly. We are super proud. She bakes the most divine gooey chocolate brownies for our Afternoon Teas quite regularly, but she also bakes cakes, cookies and has completed quite a few birthday orders already. Here she is making the most delicious lemon cake. My favourite! The more lemony, the better!

In the interest of full disclosure, she does bake with a mask on, but we took it off for the photos! It’s been difficult for Fae growing up as she is so different to her siblings. She thinks she can’t draw and she is not academic, so, she’s always felt as though she’s the odd one out. Her talent for baking and the amazing feedback that she has received for it, has enabled her to find her niche and grow in confidence. This, along with quite an astute business sense, means that we really don’t have to worry about her… She’ll be more than fine.

Once again, a huge thank you to Elana for the amazing images! She’s captured Fae so beautifully here.

Finishing touches on the Lemon Cake. This was her first time making one, so she used this absolutely delicious recipe! Thank you Plated Cravings.

You can place orders!

If you’d like to see/taste more of her creations and you live in Swellendam, she does take orders! If you don’t live in Swellendam, but would like to keep in touch, you’re welcome to follow her on IG as _thecakefaerie_

 Cuan & Chandre’s Country Wedding

A Hollywood, Gatsby, Speakeasy-style Garden Party…

As you can imagine, chatting with a couple for 2 years about one of their most important days, builds a solid friendship. Cuan & Chandre became exactly that. They were so easy and relaxed to work with and we had a ball planning each detail. Chandre wanted a Hollywood, Gatsby, Speakeasy, 20’s flapper-style outdoor garden party and our property was the perfect fit!

Thank you to 4EveryEvent for the gorgeous decor!

Their country wedding weekend kicked off with a braai on the banks of the Breede River at the Bontebok Park on the Friday evening. The ceremony and reception on Saturday and finishing off with a long family table breakfast on Sunday morning. On Saturday, there were games and snacks and drinks and then the ceremony and then a more sophisticated sit-down dinner (and drinks) and dancing and best of all a ‘dessert station’ (and drinks!) Who doesn’t love a dessert station? With macarons, profiteroles, lemon tarts, homemade chilli fudge, homemade marshmallows, milk tarts…. sigh. With the evening ending off with a whiskey bar and cheese & biscuits. The weekend was full and rich and happy. We loved it.

What the bride had to say…

We asked Chandre if she’d like to add a few words about their beautiful day and she had this to say…

‘The more I look at the piccies, the more I am blown away by how amazing the day was. Sometimes memories really do not do the moment justice! I am so grateful to you and your lovely staff for making our wedding day better than I could ever have imagined! (even when I was overthinking things, the outcome far exceeded my expectations).’

Perfect for small, intimate celebrations…

We only have the capacity to host one or two weddings a year, so they become very personal and precious to us. We love the beautiful energy they bring to our grand old dame and we are perfectly suited for small, intimate celebrations (especially now!). Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us to create your own spectacular Swellendam country wedding!

The Team…

Big shoutout to the team that made the day a resounding success… 4Every Event for the decor, lights & furniture, Saskia van Leeuwen for the flowers, Kobus Tollig for the amazing photographs… we battled to choose!

How crazy is that? Quite a lot has happened since then (hasn’t it just?!). The most newsworthy of which, I imagine, is that we, the owners of Schoone Oordt, are back and managing it ourselves again. Even though we have always been very much involved in the property, it is now truly a family-run business again…. Kids, dogs, cats and a bunch of Koi (more on the Koi in another post, Richard has plans). We’ve always wanted guests to feel as though they are visiting with the best of friends and now couldn’t be truer. A stay with us is an authentic, unpretentious, deliciously luxurious, focus on food, South African hospitality experience (as some of you already know). We honestly look forward to continuing the love and care for a long time to come…

Everybody with a tourism/hospitality/travel business has had to hunker down, consolidate, cut costs and try their best to make it through to the other side. We are no exception. We used the time during Lockdown to sort out, clean up, organise, streamline and generally dig our hands deeply back into the business. It did feel good. Gave us a chance to reset. Along with the obvious refreshing of the property, we also had to rethink and relook at our team. Luckily, we did not have to retrench too many people and we are very fortunate to be able to keep (almost) the original team that we started Schoone Oordt with. Isn’t that something?! It does feel a bit like starting from scratch again.

We did quite a lot of work on the Gardens during Lockdown and they are looking beautiful
The Wisteria is always my favourite, it’s almost as old as the house itself.
We have had some wonderful local support since re-opening on the 14th August and we are so grateful for those people brave enough to support and trust us during these crazy times. Understandingly, we have a long road ahead and we are not expecting much until September/October this year. We do hope to feel the buzz and throw our arms wide to welcome more than just a handful of guests at the end of this year though. Perhaps we’ll even be able to hug again by then… Wouldn’t that be wonderful?

We do have some specials running at the moment, a particularly good 2-night one, so if you feel like you need to get out of the city, come and see us. We also have some plans (once fibre is officially here) to offer weekly or monthly remote working specials along with all sorts of nature-social distancing-good food-kind of activities.

What do you think?

Until we speak again, keep strong, keep well, keep a sense of humour, keep connected, keep kind, keep loving and see you on the other side…

Thank you to Elana van Zyl for the fabulous family picture and Tasha Seccombe for the rest.

Overberg Roadtrip

Our first stop was in Elgin at ‘the gateway to the Overberg’, the Elgin Railway Market. The station market was converted from an old apple warehouse and now comes alive every weekend with an array of vendors offering good food and wine all from the Elgin region.

During weekdays Ground Central Coffee keeps things going with some of the best coffee in town. We touched down at the market for a quick meet and greet between all the amazing agents and suppliers involved in our trip followed by a superb lunch.

Then we headed out to Barrydale for our next stop at Joubert-Tradauw wine cellar. We made our way through the beautiful green and yellow patched landscape and headed for a quick pitstop at Ou Meul Bakery in Riviersonderend. If you travel between Cape Town and the Overberg often, you’ll know that a stop here is pretty much mandatory because nothing says “Welcome to the Overberg” like Ou Meul’s coffee and pastries.

At Joubert-Tradauw we were greeted with a hearty tapa platter (like only Beate Joubert can) to go with our wine tasting. If you’re not a wine lover, still go for the food! Although, we’re pretty sure the beautiful tastes and flavours of the Joubert-Tradauw wines will sway you to the wine side.

Frivolous and full we went off to our next location just a short drive from Joubert-Tradauw. At Sanbona Wildlife Reserved we were warmly welcomed and checked in for our luxury stay. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is much more than a safari lodge though. They are actively involved in conservation and restore of the diverse and sensitive landscape that is the Little Karoo.

The next morning, we rose early for breakfast at Sanbona. We did however do more than just feast at this unique private wildlife reserve. Que our sunrise game drive, post breakfast.

There’s nothing like breathing in the fresh, cool morning air on the back of an open Land Cruiser on an early morning game drive. The vast, scenic landscape is awe inspiring and just when you think it can’t get any more beautiful you see the long, majestic figures of giraffes approaching.

On further drive we see elephants, zebras, rhinoceros and an array of antelope. The field is a mix of Karoo veld and Fynbos, this is where the Overberg meets the Klein Karoo, the border between them – a unique and unfamiliar beauty.

Too soon our three-hour game drive comes to an end, but we leave fulfilled and ready for the next leg of our road trip. Our day is packed with loads of fun and inspiring activities to come.

Our first stop after checking out at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is the Magpie Art Collective gallery in Barrydale. The gallery relocated from Cape Town to Barrydale in 2003 and is home to whimsical and bespoke creations. Many of the works here are produced either entirely from or incorporated repurposed or recycled materials.

The gallery also plays a role in social upliftment in the town of Barrydale through their Magpie Peace Dove art project and other social art and entrepreneurship initiatives. after which we headed to Diesel & Crème for lunch and one of their legendary milkshakes, of course.

The restaurant that has become synonymous with Barrydale, Diesel and Crème, was next on our list. The retro and rustic vibe of the restaurant is an experience and a stop here is a must for every road trip through, via or around the Overberg.

Off we were to Swellendam with a scenic drive through Tradouws Pass. It was lovely to be welcomed by the familiar faces at Schoone Oordt where we checked in for the evening.

We enjoyed afternoon tea Schoone Oordt-style and then departed for the Bontebok Park, just a ten-minute drive from Schoone Oordt. At Bontebok Park we took a short tour through the park on our way to the river picnic site where a wine tasting by Olivedale Wines were awaiting us.

As we watch the sun go down over the Breede River and the song of birds finding their way home in the park around us we stand amazed by the diverse beauty of the Overberg.

After an opulent three-course breakfast at Schoone Oordt on day three of our Overberg road trip we went down to the Masbiekers Valley in Swellendam.

Through the Masbiekerskloof Valley Project led by local artist Andrew James Hofmeyr the Masbiekerskloof Valley has been ‘decorated’ with an array of natural artworks.

Alas our time in Swellendam came to an end and we had to hit the road. This time the road was mostly gravel and led us through the crop rich Napky to the Breede River Pont where we crossed the river in our bus with the Malgas Pont Ferry.

This man-hauled pontoon cable ferry is the last of its sort in South Africa. Once we crossed the river our next stop was a short drive from the pont.

Sijnn Wines sits upon a hill overlooking Malgas and the Breede River and here we were received with lunch and a wonderful wine tasting. Read more about Sijnn Wines’ unique wines on our previous blog on Sijnn.

Malgas is the perfect place to explore De Hoop Nature Reserve from but we were fortunate to stay at the luxury Morukuru Beach House inside the De Hoop Nature Reserve.

This exclusive-use house is a modern, luxurious oasis in the vast natural conservation environment that is De Hoop. After checking in we headed out for a guided walk through the unscathed Fynbos landscape atop the dunes to check out their newly built Morukuru Beach Lodge. After which, we were treated to gins and sandboarding along the dunes.

Dinner at Morukuru, like everything else at Morukuru, is an occasion in itself. And to top it all, we went off to bed with the sound of the Indian Ocean waves breaking at the shore just below the house.

After breakfast the following morning we were off to Gansbaai. Although Gansbaai is the white shark headquarter of South Africa it is also home to the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary. The sanctuary provides temporary rehabilitative care to diseased, injured or abandoned marine birds with a special focus on the endangered African Penguin colonies of Dyer Island (just off the coast at Gansbaai).

On our journey back to Cape Town we stopped off for the most glorious view and spectacular Harvest Table lunch at Mosaic Private Sanctuary. What a special place. Then we took the scenic route along the coast via Betty’s Bay and just like that our four-day Overberg road trip came to an end. From countryside to seaside, fine wine to unique safari experiences it’s almost impossible to single out only one of the many highlights – the Overberg has it all.

Our Overberg road trip would not have been the same without each of the wonderful sponsors involved. From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank Grand Expeditions, Tour d’Afrique, Vindigo Travel, Fairfield Tours, Destinate Travel, Kobo Safaris, Pure Africa Experiences for their time out of the office and their enthusiasm for and participation in our Overberg Road Trip. It also would not have been possible without the wonderful commitment from Wesgro and SATSA. Thank you for your passionate energy and sponsorship. Lastly, but not leastly, a huge thank you to the suppliers along the way. We would not have had such a successful Overberg Road Trip without them…

Family Activities

Yes, you read correctly. The Continent of Sulina was the home of Ian and Minky Sulin – potters and sculptors by trade. The sanctuary was established in 1991. Sulina came about as a manifestation of a promise Minky made to her angelic and fairy friends as a child. Through Ian and Minky’s love for nature a self sufficient garden came about. In their garden an array of angelic and fairy sculptures can be found. Some are hidden in the lush garden while others beautifully displayed and in waiting to be admired.

The fairy sanctuary has an enchanting playground with jungle gyms and beautiful doll’s houses. It is the perfect place to let the little ones run wild. Pack a picnic basket and enjoy the tranquility of the majestic fairy garden. The gallery is a non-profit organisation established as an outlet for fellow artists who could not find job satisfaction in the corporate world. Ian and Minky refer to it as their ‘adoption centre’ for their unique creations.

A visit to The Continent of Sulina makes for a truly unique family activity in Swellendam. Children’s fascination with the dozens of little creatures will keep them busy for ages. While those who are easily bored can play their hearts out on the playground. It is a fascinating outing. One that frees the imagination of both young and old.

Robertson Wine Valley Wine Tour Bus

Choose between self-guided hop-on-hop-off tours or planned day trips which include exclusive tastings, winemaker tours and lunch. We were treated to a self-guided tour of the Golden Mile, many of the Robertson Wine Valley‘s famous wine farms are located along this route, situated in the appropriately named Goudmyn region just outside Robertson. We hopped-on at Bon Courage Estate where we started the day early with breakfast at Cafe Maude. You can also start the route in town at the Robertson Tourism Office and transfers from surrounding towns like Montagu, Bonnievale and Swellendam are also available on request.

Our first stop after a scrumptious breakfast was Viljoensdrift Wines, the family-owned wine farm on the banks of the Breede River is well known for their award-winning wines, but also for the Uncle Ben River Boat cruises. A tranquil cruise on the Breede River was the perfect way to kick-off our wine adventure. So with a packed picnic basket, a beautiful bottle (or two) of Chardonnay and massive excitement we boarded the Uncle Ben II. The stunning views paired with a yummy cheese platter and fine wine make for an exceptionally unique and memorable experience. In what felt like an instant, our hour long cruise had come to an end and after contemplating a picnic on Viljoendrift‘s landscaped lawn overlooking the River (the jungle gym and long stretched out lawns make it a great place for family outings), we chose to get as much variation in our day as possible, so we hopped-on to the Wine Valley Safari bus awaiting us and moved to our next exciting location.

With the windows of our safari bus open, we cruised to our next location with the wind in our hair enjoying the breeze and beautiful views. Van Loveren‘s tasting hall lives up to every expectation of a household name brand and Schoone Oordt’s chosen house wine. A relaxed and down-to-earth vibe prevails inside with friendly and inviting staff who know their product very well. Van Loveren is constant expanding brand and their tasting hall is the best place to get familiar with all that they offer – that’s right, Van Loveren recently added whiskey (the eight year old Scottish Cousin is a firm favourite), ciders, beers and gin to their range. With hiking and MTB trails, the stunning Christina’s at Van Loveren Restaurant and so many different wine and food pairings available to taste you can honestly spend an entire day here.

Once again we chose to drain as much out of the day as we possible, so after a gin tasting and the Christina Master Wine Tasting we hopped-on our Wine Valley Safari bus and hopped-off at our next stop, Excelsior Wine Estate. The Graze @ Excelsior Deli is a local favourite offering scrumptious baked goods, traditional breads and roosterbrood sandwiches. Children can play safely on the jungle gyms or run around on the large expanse of lawn – making it another great venue for family outings. The tasting room overlooks the farm dam and here you can even blend and label your own bottle of wine. Excelsior Wine Estate has a wide variety of wines from which everyone from novice wine drinkers to wine connoisseurs can find something they’ll love.

Our final stop was Zandvliet Wine Estate. We were pleasantly surprised by the sophisticated interiors of the historic Cape Dutch tasting room building. The beautiful lounge area inside is the perfect place for small, private functions (and wine tasting, of course) and the outside old porch creates a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere where multiple bottles of wine (or just a wine tasting) can be enjoyed. Our jaws dropped further to the floor as we ducked down to the old cellar where beautiful art displays and age old wines deck the walls of what were once concrete wine tanks. Viewing a bit of the history behind the wines made us appreciate our tastings even more.

Alas, we were well ‘stuffed’ with food and wine and had to end our tour there. We headed back to our starting point, Bon Courage. Our friendly driver, Andy, enthusiastically helped us carry our multiple provisions (which we’d happily collected throughout our tour) to our own vehicle and made sure we had all our belongings (such a thoughtful tour guide, thank you Andy, you were superb). If it’s the best variety of wine tasting experiences you are looking for we highly recommend you do the popular Golden Mile Route on a Saturday.

If you’d like to try something a little off the beaten track, the Klaasvoogds Meander Route is a superb option. With stops at olive farms, a lavendar farm, spa and numerous prestigious wine estates such as Kranskop Winery, Fraai Uitzicht and Rietvallei Wine Estate this route offers a unique experience in the Robertson Wine Valley.

We’re so excited to share this beautiful wine valley with our guests and with the option of transferring straight from Swellendam it can only make for an unforgettable highlight to your stay at Schoone Oordt. We can highly recommend booking the Wine Valley Safari hop-on-hop-off bus as your mode of transportation for your next wine adventure in Robertson – it’s a carefree and fun way to enjoy one of South Africa’s most beautiful Wine Valley’s. Thanks a mill to Wine Valley Safari for hosting us and for a day well spent – we thoroughly enjoyed our tour and can’t wait to see your new business thrive.

Hiking and MTB in Grootvadersbosch

On the evening of 15 June we play host to the wonderful Charl Du Plessis Trio‘s performance. The versatile and highly regarded trio will be treating attendees to a range of Baroque, swing and classical music. Tickets are available online at Quicket as well as at the door. Come join us for a great show and mingle over a complimentary glass of flagship Sijnn Red.

The festival extends throughout the weekend though and festival goers can join in wonderful activities such as a dairy tour and milk tasting, bird watching and various hikes through different parts of the Grootvadersbosch Forests. The Grootvadersbosch Conservancy recently added a variety of new hiking and MTB trails in the Grootvadersbosch Valley. So it’s a great excuse for hiking and MTB enthusiasts (amateurs and pros) to try out these new trails for hiking and MTB in Grootvadersbosch. It is an absolutely beautiful and unique area with vast indigenous flora. The hiking and MTB Grootvadersbosch trails all start at the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy office just outside Suurbraak. For more information on the Grootvadersbosch hiking and MTB trails visit their website, here.

Artists in Swellendam: Alida diTekenar

After completing her studies she headed to Swellendam, where her parents had settled after she finished school. Alida grew up and lived in various towns and cities all over South Africa during her childhood. A positive experience for her, as she says she “had a lot of exposure to different cultures and people, it had a huge influence on how I see people, to be open minded and not judgmental”. At first returning to a small town was a bit of an adjustment for Alida but Swellendam, with its majestic mountain, peace and quiet, soon captured her heart. Nearly 18 years after arriving in Swellendam, Alida has become one of the best-known artists in Swellendam and one of our town’s proudest exports.

Even though she took a while to adjust to life in a small town she now finds the tranquility a prerequisite to her work. “When I create I need absolute stillness and peace around me, especially when I start planning a new painting. Swellendam is the ideal place for that. You can hear the birds and other nature sounds, very few cars, and next door from my studio, there are some sheep grazing. Every now and then they talk to each other. It’s the perfect place to be creative.”

She might take inspiration from her direct environment but her work is sought after internationally. Alida has done numerous commissions for families from all over the world (we’ll get to her beautiful family portraits in a minute) and has been invited to exhibit at the Salle Gramijn in the Beffroi de Bruges in Belgium (we’re rooting for you to accept the next invite, dear Alida). She was also commissioned to illustrate the lyrics to one of singer, Stef Bos’, songs after Mr Bos bought a painting from her – one of her fondest career highlights.

Locally, Alida has also excelled, having illustrated for Rooi Rose’s rubric Griet Grondengel and doing the illustrations for a show with herbal guru, Antoinette Pienaar. One of her more recent highlights was having one of her illustrations which she donated to the Swellendam Hospital Fundraiser in 2017 auctioned off to model and TV-presenter, Minki van der Westhuizen, at the function.

Our favourite work of Alida’s is undoubtedly the very special piece she illustrated of our family and Schoone Oordt staff with Schoone Oordt as backdrop. Starting out in 2008, Alida worked on it for us three times as our family expanded. We loved the sense of whimsy captured in her work.

Alida’s style is strongly influenced by animation. “Every drawing starts off in the way you would draw an animation character, using those same principals and so creating the movement that is in my work. I would describe my characters as real, yet unreal looking, whimsical with a touch of magic. A camera can capture something exactly as it is, but by drawing and painting you can add anything you can dream up, making it appear magical!” It’s exactly that magic that makes her work so unique and sought after.

Currently Alida diTekenar is working on illustrations for books, planning a new series for exhibition in 2019 as well as working on her own animation short film – so much magic to look forward to! All of this and she teaches art classes to children too. These classes focus on how to remain original and how to develop and follow your own style.

Take a visit to Alida’s studio gallery in Swellendam by contacting her via email at ditekenar@starmail.co.za. For a little bit of whimsy on a regular basis be sure to follow her on social media at Alida diTekenar.

Artists in Swellendam: Andrew James Hofmeyr

Meet Andrew James Hofmeyr, also known as ‘The Foxman’ to those who have become familiar with his work. Blurring the lines between illustrator and painter (oh, we won’t put you in a box, Mr Fox) Andrew has made waves with his unique artwork. Waves have also been the inspiration behind some of his latest work, but his most distinguished work takes inspiration from the British Red Fox. Andrew’s work is distinctive not only for his use of raw wooden blocks as canvas but also for his illustrative style.

The Foxman is an English Literature major and spent nearly twelve years living and working as a teacher abroad (in the UK and Taiwan amongst others). Not something he stumbled upon, education is a great passion of Andrew and that he is an educator by heart becomes evident when you first meet him. A born and bred Johannesburger, Andrew found himself in Swellendam after helping his retired parents settle in to their new home near Buffeljagsrivier.

However it was during his time in the UK that he took an interest in the British Red Fox. He observed and encountered these wonderful yet somewhat marginalized “fuzzy balls of magic” scouring and scoffing their way through the urban jungle. Very appropriately Andrew’s first international exhibition was also in the UK. This exhibition, Into the Wild, celebrated the British Red Fox.

Taking inspiration from the fox’s ability to live off what seems to most as old and thrown out food and material, most of Andrew’s work is based on raw wooden blocks instead of smooth white canvas. Originally, he sourced the blocks from scaffolding companies in the UK throwing out their old, ‘useless’ boards. Since moving to Swellendam he’s been supporting local business by sourcing the raw wood and boards he uses for his paintings from the local saw mill in Swellendam.

The texture that the wooden blocks add to his work more often than not intrigues viewers to want to touch and feel the painting – something that is usually discouraged by artists. However, Andrew is all for tangible interaction with his work. In fact, he often includes small sculptures in his exhibitions and he has even included a little treasure hunt in his 2017 exhibition, The Fox Odyssey, at the Magpie Art Collective in Barrydale.

Andrew means that “art is not passive”. We couldn’t agree more with the Foxman’s statement. His work is certainly more than a beautiful painting fixed on a wall – it’s intriguing, yet relatable, open-minded and very joyful. Very much like the educator in Andrew, his work will have you contemplating for days after you’ve viewed it and will leave you with a renewed perspective.

We’re so lucky to have you in our midst and look forward to seeing what mind-boggling beauty you dream up next, Andrew!

For more of Andrew’s collections and stunning commissioned work visit his website or see what he is currently working on, on his awesome Instagram and Facebook feed.

Sijnn Wines: One of the most pioneering Wine Estates near Swellendam

As you cross the bridge over the Breederiver when driving from Swellendam toward Cape Town a turn-off on the left hand side leads you onto a gravel road. What might seem like a lonely gravel road is really a main route for local farmers and during grain harvest time in the Overberg (October to December) you might be surprised to find quite an overload of harvesters and large trucks carrying grains to Protem and Swellendam. The route takes you through the Napky District toward the small, unscathed town of Malgas on the banks of the Breederiver. Driving through this district in the summer months it is hard to believe that anything will grow here – the Overberg has a way to turn quite dry just to get ready for planting season once Autumn sets in.

However as you pass the turn-off to Malgas and take a left toward Lemoentuin you find a beautiful, lush green landscape on the riverbank – somewhat of an oasis. This landscape is the home of Sijnn Wines the brainchild of David and Rita Trafford and the only winefarm and cellar in the region. The Traffords discovered the land while on holiday in Malgas in 2000, the soil and landscape reminded them of Portugal and they were immediately intrigued. A purchase agreement and more than 200 soil profiles later approximately ten hectares of vines were planted and the name Sijnn Wines was appropriated to the venture – fittingly so as the word sijnn is derived from the Khoisan word meaning riverbank.

What makes Sijnn Wines so unique (and their wines so wonderful) is not only their unique location but also their strong focus on having nature keep the upper hand in the growth and production processes. For this reason and due to the feeble essence of the soil here (it’s really unbelievable that anything grows in this rough terrain) vines are not trellised but rather kept in its natural form as bush vines – yielding lower tonnages but in return providing a grape of much higher quality resulting in a superior wine. Bush vines are harvested by hand, of course, and Sijnn Wines wouldn’t have it any different even though harvesting by hand is fast becoming an unconventional practice in South Africa due to increased trellising and mechanization.

In 2015 David furnished the building that was originally meant to become the cellar with all the necessary equipment for making the wine on site – before grapes were sent off to a different location for the wine making process. Until recently grapes were pressed with a traditional press but from the 2016 harvest onward a mechanical press will be used in order to accommodate the larger harvests, hooray more wine!

Sijnn Wines has become well known for their interesting and bold choices of cultivars and blends – yet another reason we adore their wines so much. They focus on Southern European and Mediterranean varieties that are best suited for the warm and dryer climate of Malgas. Under the expertise of owner and architect-turned-winemaker, David, Sijnn Wines has won numerous accolades and we would certainly give them the Schoone Oordt golden stamp of approval (and appreciation while we’re at it). We love pairing their Sijnn Red, a blend of Mourvedre, Syrah, Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira, with dinner and their lightly wooded Chenin Blanc is perfect with lighter meals or appetizers.

Two new blocks of vines were established in 2016 and we cannot wait to see (and taste) how the new varieties will be incorporated in the already stunning Sijnn Wines collection.

If you find yourself over a weekend in the Overberg, then we can highly recommend booking a tasting at Sijnn Wines, the most pioneering wine estate near Swellendam, the beautiful views, friendly people and great wine won’t disappoint.

Eureka Mills Stoneground Flour – An Ethical Food Overberg Story

Eureka Mills started out in 1998 as the brainchild of the Uys cousins, Lafras and Pieter, from Karringmelksrivier in the Overberg; two grain farmers looking to create a value-added product from their crop. They set up a small stone grounding plant and the first batch of flour was packaged by hand in their own kitchens. Whilst they strongly believed in the nutrition and goodness of their product, the challenge was to create a market for wholesome, authentic flour in a world where convenience shopping and fast moving consumer goods was deeply entrenched.

That’s where Nico Steyn came in. In 1999 Nico, also born and bred in the Overberg, joined the company as the marketing and general daily running of the plant manager. Nico, who had travelled Europe extensively before joining Eureka Mills, was inspired by the European bread and flour culture and their return towards high quality, authentic food. He tried to incorporate that bread and flour culture into the Eureka Mills brand, quite successfully, we think. He remembers their first marketing endeavours with fondness. Days on the road presenting their products to restaurants, bakeries and hospitality institutions in the Southern Cape and even to the Cape Women’s Agricultural Association (CWAA) ladies in the small Overberg towns – the perfect way of spreading the stone ground flour and bread ‘gospel’. Today Eureka Mills has distribution centres in five provinces from where they send their delicious wheat to all corners of South Africa.

At Schoone Oordt Country House we bake our own bread and afternoon treats daily using Eureka Mills’ Brown Bread, White Bread and Cake Flour. Our Chef Obie says that these flours give a greater rise with less raising agent due to the purity and unbleached quality of the wheat. Eureka Mills prides itself on the purity of all of their products. Not only is their wheat unbleached but it is not chemically fortified and none of their products are mixed with other substitute grains.

To further enforce the authentic and ethical bread and flour culture in South Africa, Eureka Mills hosts a number of artisan bread workshops through the Overberg, Cape Town and Johannesburg where both amateur and pro bakers can learn how to mix, knead and bake the perfect bread.

Eureka Mills recently expanded their product range to include scrumptious rusks with the aim of providing ethical convenience foods. We bake our own home-made rusks weekly to put into the tea and coffee stations in our rooms. These, along with our scrumptious afternoon tea bakes really do taste better… Not only because of a superior quality product, but because they are made with love from inception to completion.

Eureka Mills recently upgraded and expanded their plant and although they still operate on a medium family run scale we know that they will go from strength to strength as their wheat so accurately represents country living and the soul of the Overberg.

On that note, Eureka Mills is running a fantastic competition at the moment… Pop on over to their website for a gander.

Why we love Country Weddings in Swellendam

Unlike a city wedding, guests are able to escape their own lives and re-connect, both with themselves and their ‘people’. At Schoone Oordt, wedding parties can spend time before and after the ceremony exploring Swellendam’s restaurants and coffee shops, unwinding on the river – or treating themselves to a pamper at the Rain Forest Spa.

Schoone Oordt, for over a century, has been backdrop to numerous romantic and love-filled events and we feel that we are continuing this legacy by co-creating magical moments with our brides and grooms. As hosts, we feel so honoured to be invited to be a part of these precious times.

The first anniversary of one particularly magical story has just been marked. Maxine and Francois were married at our small hotel in October last year, with an elegant garden party to celebrate the occasion. The wedding began with a loving ceremony overlooking the pool, then merged into a picnic-style high tea on the lawn with personalised picnic baskets and kikois. Vintage lawn games kept both children and older guests enthralled. Light music tinkled in the background amidst laughter and heartwarming speeches.

An exquisite long table with twinkling fairy lights was set up under the trees for the wedding party to progress into an authentic, but sophisticated South African Braai for dinner… Unfortunately, the weather didn’t quite play along, so we happily moved the long table into our light and airy Conservatory for an evening of dancing, love and much conversation and laughter.

My Pretty Vintage helped realise Max & Frankie’s glamorous 1920’s theme, which transformed the hotel into something reminiscent of Downton Abbey. They were amazing to work with and we highly recommend them. The Wedding Cake from The Cupcake Tarts added to the many savoury and sweet treats created by our own Schoone Oordt kitchen. These beautiful pictures were made by our beautiful Bruce Geils, based here in Swellendam. A truly talented gent.

As in true Schoone Oordt style, our brides and grooms become our friends, if they are not already close to our heart. Max & I have walked a long road together and we couldn’t be happier that she has finally found Frankie. Frankie is the ultimate gentleman, fiercely dedicated to Max, who is an extraordinary woman in every way. Their fairy tale is not a story without challenges but their love has truly conquered all.

Dear Max & Frankie had this to say about their day:

The day (weekend!) was a truly, truly special time of deep joy and celebration for us. This was perfectly complemented by your superb venue which provided a truly beautiful and luxurious setting for our vintage, 1920’s style wedding. Thank you Alison, Richard, Sonette, Wander, Fidiney and the entire Schoone Oordt Family for your passion and love which could be felt throughout the weekend.

Max and Frankie, thank you for the privilege of letting us take care of you and your guests on your enchanted wedding weekend. More happy memories settle into Schoone Oordt as another beautiful country wedding in Swellendam is added to our album.

The Hidden Letters in Swellendam South Africa

Even before we’d discovered Swellendam South Africa, Richard found this old couch on one of his antique store trawls in 2002. He bought it. It sat in a pile of building rubble for the many years that we’ve been restoring and building our Schoone Oordt country hotel. This past winter, whilst breathing new life into the rooms, kitchen and garden, Richard also found the time to ‘potter’ on restoring the couch in his workshop.

This is what it looked like lying outside Schoone Oordt and pre-restoration:The restoration project of this beautiful old piece of furniture is perhaps a story enough, but what makes this truly memorable, is that two old letters dating back to World War Two were found hidden down the side. Obviously stuck there in anger or pain and forgotten. They conjure a story of love, of hurt, of betrayal and leave us wondering whatever happened to the people in the story. For privacy reasons, we haven’t posted the letters so that you can read them, but if you recognise the writing, do let us know, we’d love to return them to their rightful.

And after many hours of pottering in Richard’s true perfectionist style, here is the finished couch proudly displayed in our beautiful Honeymoon Suite. Thank you for the gorgeous pictures Wander & Sonette Bester (our management couple extraordinaire!).

Lizelle & Kevin’s Country Wedding… in the rain, in Swellendam

Lizelle & Kevin are a dream couple. They are gorgeous, uncomplicated, easy-going and we clicked with them immediately. They absolutely LOVED Wander’s food especially his homemade chocolate ice-cream. So much so, that Kevin ate it for breakfast more than once. Their wedding was HUGELY blessed by the relentless rain. Lizelle & Kevin galoshed (is that a word?) their way through their ceremony which was held at the most spectacular property close to Swellendam called ‘GodsWindow’. Lizelle had visited the farm there as a little girl and had kept it in her heart for her ideal Swellendam country wedding.

Their reception was held in our light and airy conservatory which looked so beautiful. We loved the ‘Candy Bar’ with sweets made themselves, we loved the white balls and fairy lights hanging from the ceiling and we loved the pure colours, succulents with soft roses, but most of all, we loved spending this glorious day with a truly lovely couple. Thank you to Lizell & Kevin for choosing to share it with us!
