breakfast in swellendam

If there’s one breakfast in Swellendam you need to have its Schoone Oordt’s full course breakfast.  It’s “the perfect three course start to your day” and has been called “the highlight of the stay”, “memorable”, “hard to beat” and “a real treat” by our guests.  Although there is something new on the breakfast menu every morning we like to deck out our buffet with a few regulars like fruits, breads and cereals.breakfast in swellendam

Of these breakfast buffet regulars our favourite has to be our homemade granola – a recipe developed by our very own Alison herself. In early days at Schoone Oordt  Alison used to take charge of preparing breakfast.

The founder and the maker – Chef Obie still uses Alison’s recipe for the breakfast granola.

Although we now have Chef Obie at the head of things in the kitchen we still use Alison’s fabulous granola recipe.

Alison’s Fabulous Granola ready to be served at the breakfast buffet.

Because we know so many of our guests and readers are on-the-go and sometimes too busy to even grab breakfast at home we thought we’d share our granola recipe so everyone can enjoy a bit of Schoone Oordt at home (and not skip the most important meal of the day).

Alison’s Fabulous Granola

250g Rolled Oats
150g Wheatgerm (optional)
100g Coconut Flakes
100g Mixed Nuts
50g Sunflower Seeds
50g Pumpkin Seeds
30g Sesame Seeds (also optional)
2 tbsp Poppy Seeds
250ml Warmed Honey
250g Butter or Coconut Oil (optional)
Some dried fruit – cranberries and/or raisins work best

Just throw a few ingredients together, bake – easy!

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Grease a large baking sheet. Mix all ingredients, except fruit and honey together in a large mixing bowl. Pour warmed honey & butter/coconut oi over the top and stir until all ingredients are covered. Spread mixture out onto the baking sheet and bake for about 15 mins. Stir every 5 minutes or so, so that it doesn’t burn. Leave to cool. Sprinkle dried fruit over the top once cooled and transfer to an airtight container.

Our homemade granola is the perfect balance between crunchy, sweet and wholesome and is equally delicious served with greek yoghurt and fruit or by itself as a snack (if you’re in a real hurry).
