Diary of a Grand Dame

Diary of a Grand Dame

Richard and I met Karen and Brian at Phantom Forest in Knysna about 7 years ago. Kai (our son) was just on a year and Richard and I had snuck away to celebrate his birthday (Richards, not Kais) and spend some time together for the first time since baby was born. Well, celebrate we did into the wee hours of the morning with the fabulous Karen and Brian.

All through the renovating and building of Schoone Oordt, we had kept in contact and theyd promised to visit as soon as they could. With the Soccer World Cup as a perfect excuse, they came to spend a few days with us. We had a wonderful time. They are the funniest, smartest, most special people and we loved having them here.

They very kindly wrote this in the visitors book… A big Thank You to Ali, Richard, family and staff for making our stay ...

Gill, Gideon & Jake came to spend a weekend with us about a week ago with a view to networking and experiencing each other’s properties. It’s always a good thing to chat about ideas and brainstorm a little with people in the same industry. I firmly believe in working together to encourage both local and international visitors to explore our beautiful country rather than being competitive. It’s also just lekker to talk about and share experiences.

What beautiful people. I fell completely in love with Jake, who is the most confident and gorgeous little boy. Gill & Gideon are down-to-earth, real, wonderful people and perfectionists to boot.

Their guesthouse is stunning! Have a look at Great place to spend two nights on the coast either on your way back or on your way to Cape Town and of course, one of the best places to spot whales in (whale) season. Make absolutely ...

Well, we’ve had a super busy season, our best so far, which is why the diary pages have been so quiet. Thank you to all of our wonderful guests for making that happen and a very big thank you to all of those whom have returned and sent friends and family!

We’ve also been VERY anxiously awaiting Julie & Matt’s wedding pictures… Aren’t they beautiful? They were taken by Jules Morgan. Those of you that remember our family picture that’s displayed in the conservatory – same photographer – have a look at her site…

Julie & Matt got married on the 3rd January this year under a white canopy on our lush green grass. I say, lush, because we spent weeks before the wedding tending to it daily! It became my pet project. They invited 20 of their closest friends and family to spend the day and evening with them here. All ...

The Double Century0

Posted 23 November, 2009

Once again the mad cyclists descended on Swellendam for the Double Century race this year. What fun! We are so grateful for the exposure and income that this endurance race brings to our town and I can’t believe that it’s been an entire year since the last one!

This time Schoone Oordt offered dinner on both the Friday and Saturday nights to the ‘Vanilla Gorilla’s’, so we spent a large portion of the weekend cooking up a storm. Our meals are rustic, robust home-cooked fare like homemade pasta with a choice of bolognese sauce, alfredo sauce or pesto. Delicious homemade garlic bread and an exceptionally large, fresh green salad. Saturday night was a traditional braai with chops, boerewors, pork ribbetjies, chicken skewers, homemade roosterkoek, two salads and malva pudding with fresh farm cream. For me, there’s nothing more satisfying than well-fed guests and our meals are made with passion and love.
